Concept of Course

  • This version of English 149: a collaboratively-taught "center"-based course:
  • Course on "digital humanities" and "E-lit" approaches to literature (with some overlap with "new media studies").
  • We'll learn to use digital methods to analyze and interpret literature.
  • We'll learn to use digital methods to create "electronic literature."
  • We'll also get a sense of the larger, evolving context of digital humanities, media history, and social history in the background.

Structure of Course

  • First 8 classes introduce some of the main principles, topics, and tools of digital humanities and E-lit (with special focus on its application to literature).
  • The rest of the course is devoted to project-making. Students form project teams and collaborate in workshop mode during class to create by the end of the quarter a detailed proposal for a digital project about literature.
    • Students form teams. Teams present an idea about how to use digital methods for a hybrid analytical/creative project.
    • Then by the end of the quarter, teams are responsible for presenting a detailed proposal (including digital examples, partial versions, etc.) of their project concept (it doesn't have to be fully polished). -- 50% of final grade.
  • Besides the team projects, students have solo assignments --50% of final grade:
    • Practicums
    • Digital Analysis (Distant Reading) Assignment
    • E-lit Creative Assignment

Special Assignment for Class 3

  • Create your system for working with online readings. Because so many of the readings in this course are online, students are required to demonstrate in class during Class 3 that they have developed a workflow for annotating and saving copies of online materials according to one of the methods described in Guide to Downloading and Managing Online Readings.
